Summary
Jaskier had climbed the trail up to the keep before with Geralt and it had definitely taken a lot less time. (The Witchers themselves called it ‘the killer’, and they had the nerve to call Jaskier dramatic). But Geralt was only pretending he wasn’t ill, and Jaskier himself was admittedly tired and sore and hungry again. The bread and dried fruit they’d bought for lunch with their last orrens barely made a dent in it.
After a hard year, Jaskier and Geralt head up to Kaer Morhen for the winter to rest and recover. But they aren’t the only guests, and Jaskier rummages around in everybody’s closets until he finds the ghosts.

He grabs the keys from his motorcycle—god forbid someone comes by and steals his bike. His pistol stays on him; he doesn’t feel like dragging the Punisher along. As he moves toward the shed, he checks the revolver’s rounds, snapping the barrel shut when all six bullets are in place. He cocks the gun, now ready in case some maniac is bleeding out in there.
Then he hears it.
A faint cry.
“What the hell…” he mutters, quickening his pace. That’s not just any cry—it’s a baby. And as he gets closer, the sound confirms it.
“Fuck, you’re kidding me,” he breathes, pressing his back against the shed’s worn exterior. He counts down from three, then spins into the doorframe, gun raised.

Bruce has always wanted Jason to be an alpha. From the moment he presented as an alpha himself all those years ago, he's felt like he's the only one who has a hard time pretending to enjoy it. After all, most alphas must not want to be alphas anyways, because being an omega seems like the most wonderful thing in the world. If Jason were to rely on him to be an alpha, he thinks that he can finally begin to see it as a positive attribute.
He was under the impression that Jason wanted that too, but now it doesn't seem that way. Jason has been changing, and becoming less and less like the boy Bruce expected, and loved. He doesn't seem like he wants to be an alpha, and that hurts. Bruce isn't even thinking about VAD, until the test comes back for a likely genetic risk, and suddenly all of these symptoms make sense... right?
Sometimes the hardest people to show yourself to, are the ones that have buried their own selves so deep, that they no longer know who they are.
