Summary
The Law of Surprise was a tradition as old as time—as old as stories themselves!—so there was absolutely no excuse for the fairy queen that Geralt was forced to interact with for this contract mangling its implementation. Instead of the next thing you didn't know you had, she phrased it as "the next thing you didn't know you wanted." It was a stupid mistake, but luckily inconsequential, since the blessing/curse would obviously never activate. Geralt prided himself on always knowing what he wanted.
Which was why it was such a surprise when, after a conversation with Jaskier about the bard's future, Geralt found himself inexplicably transformed into a human woman.
