    The boy stood in front of the machine, his arms poised in what Richard knew to be a stance in karate. He cut quite a striking figure, with his perfect posture and resolute expression.
    He watched as the boy took a deep breath before his right arm shot out and struck the center of the punching bag. The LED lights showed a number Richard couldn’t be bothered to read, for all his attention was on the boy’s face, stained with tears.
