“Jimmy? Oh, my baby.”
He sits upright now, pushing himself to sit and throws his knees over the hard edge of the mattress. His feet – bare, and stubby-toed with hairy knuckles – slide across old hardwood that will creak if he places his foot wrong. Except, he doesn’t, because decades of training pile upon a lifetime of knowing. He knows this floor and this bed and this room, in an apartment he hasn’t stepped foot in since Christmas of ’42.
“Mama?” He croaks out now, scanning the half-dark for exits and enemies, and a voice he’s long missed. Winnifred Barnes is not a large woman, perhaps the same height as Steve before the serum and with bones like a bird’s. But for all that delicateness, she is unwavering in her strength. Bathed in the warm glow of the hall light, which burns his eyes, she seems just as she had the last time he hugged her goodbye.
