    Summary

Why is it like this? You were rather fresh dough brought into a world full of suffering. Going kingdom to kingdom, place to place, fixing problems you never asked for. Problems that your companions seemed almost excited at times to face head on. But you just wanted it all to stop. Looking back, maybe it would’ve been better if you didn’t escape the witch’s house and just let yourself be eaten…

    Summary

Jax looked away, chin on the pastel-pink pillow that was still hugged to his chest, "Don't act like you understand."

No one dared to understand him, and why would they? Who cared for a sorry excuse of a paradox like him? Starved of being understood, but pushed away every chance of being honest. The idea was unfamiliar, alien even. Heck, he didn't understand himself; who knows what was wrong with him? He was simply like that. Cruel, unsociable, not even human, maybe. It was just who he was.

Kinger just sat there, unfazed. He watched, careful, calculating. Handling this moment with a scary amount of delicacy.

    "Then make me."

Jax's gaze snapped back to him, "What?"

Kinger gazed into the void of Jax's eyes. Patient, waiting, perhaps even unconditional.

    "Make me understand."

    Summary

"You're not dead," Pomni said with a frown. "Not yet, at least. You're just — indisposed."

At that, Jax gave her a long look as his mouth narrowed out into a little line. Then he sighed quietly. It wasn't the way he used to sigh, with dramatic posturing that begged the attention from anyone even remotely listening. It was small. Tired. Reflexive. Then he sat down with his knees to his chest, glaring into the dark water. The only light here, a single streetlamp, glowed weakly.

"Denial is an ugly color on you. Clashes with your stupid hat."

    "Jax — "

"I'm gone," he snapped. His voice echoed in the abyss. "Don't you get it? No one comes back from Abstraction. You're not saving me, you're not helping me grow. All you're doing is keeping my body from rotting." Jax's hands worked their way up to his head, squeezing as he growled, "You're talking to a ghost."

or, a post-canon fix-it fic, featuring the De-Abstraction of Jax. It's messy and it takes time, but it's never too late to try.

    Summary

"We were so worried, we heard you—" Ragatha starts, and then looks up. She meets Jax's gaze dead-on, and goes silent. Tears brim in the corner of her eye. Her hand flies up to cover her mouth. He can't tell if the look on her face is relief or fear.

Gangle's staring at him like she's seen a ghost. Pomni slowly raises to her feet, brows furrowed. She winces as every movement jars her wavering form.

Cowered on the floor, panting, confused and disoriented, with everyone standing above him, taller than him… it reminds Jax of something deeply unpleasant. They're all staring at him. They're all seeing him.

Jax knows they're not going to like what they see.

His breath quickens until his head is spinning, and he feels like he's going to vomit. He forces himself upwards with a frustrated cry, swaying in place, and then turns and bolts towards his room as fast as he can.

    "NO!" Pomni screams.

(or: pomni pulls jax back from the brink.)

    Summary

It’s bright in the room with the curtains half-open, so your reflection is squinting, but you can still see that your left eye is red. You rest your hand on the rim of Flowey’s pot, and in the mirror you see him raise a dubious brow at the portrait you three make.

“It’s us,” Chara observes through your mouth. Flowey shrugs his little leaf arms, like can’t argue with that I guess. You smile.
