Summary
Law of Large Numbers: Understand that in the long run, the results will converge on the mathematical probability, ensuring the house edge wins over time.

“Shane. I mean this in the most loving and sweet way possible, you are introverted and shy. I have never even heard of you introducing yourself to someone, at least without a buffer or a bridge. It makes you uncomfortable. But you, at seventeen, went up to a very cute and talented boy, and introduced yourself to him?” She raised her eyebrows at him.
“I…I…holy shit, Rose, did I have a crush on him then?”
“I think so, babe.”
“I didn’t even think I was gay! Like hadn’t crossed my mind. I had a girlfriend!"

Shane: Well. Here’s the thing. We know that… that the speculation on the internet is that Ilya and I got together in 2017. Depending on how you define ‘got together,’ that’s not exactly accurate.
Cassie: It’s not?
Luna: Wait. Wait, wait, wait. So… when, then?
Ilya: 2010.
[Luna screams, gets up from the couch again and stalks to the wall of the studio]
Cassie: What? Are you fucking with me? Like is this a prank?
Luna: [muffled, off mic] Two thousand and ten? Ten? Are you sure?
Shane: Pretty sure, yeah.

Summary
The first sound Ilya hears is a thin, discordant symphony of beeps and whirs. Something vibrating.
The next thing he hears is…wet. A sort of shaking, gargling sound, that feels like the ugliest crying he’s ever heard. And through it, Shane’s voice.
“I’m with him now, mom. He’s— he’s not fine. He’s not. I know—”
Ilya wants to ask who's not fine, but he can’t feel his own body, his mouth, enough to ask.
“Yeah,” Shane is saying, only slightly calmer. “I know. He wasn’t breathing—"
Ilya knows there's a link, between the clinical musicality of medical settings, Shane’s audible, awful distress, and his own physical incapacity. It’s just, it’s so tenuous, and the air around him is so thick, so heavy. It would be easy, to sleep, a little.

Footage of the last game between Ottawa and Montreal is everywhere; it’s breached containment from the sports world, and now it seems like everyone is baying for Montreal’s blood. Except, Ilya is oblivious. Not exactly blissfully so, but as the fight for accountability within the league rages on without him, Ilya just wants someone, anyone, to tell him what happened.- Language:

“It wasn’t all bad,” Shane says, holding the screen up and sounding suspiciously like he’s trying to reassure himself, instead. “See?”
A gif plays, and Ilya watches the looping image on the tiny screen. It’s them—the two of them, in their Centaurs jerseys. Ilya’s holding Shane by the waist, lifting him inches off the ice, spinning him, as Shane holds on for balance. As each of their faces spins into frame, their grins light up the screen. Bashful and adoring for Shane, radiant and proud for Ilya. The gif keeps looping. They keep spinning.

Summary
“No vodka?” Rozanov asks, tsking in disapproval but looking amused. “What then? What does the great Shane Hollander want when he does a good job? What is your vice, Hollander?”
“Hmmmm, mangoes,” Shane sighs out wistfully. It’s not a dangerous allergy for him, but it does mean being itchy and sometimes a little queasy for a couple of days after. Really he knows that he should probably avoid them altogether, but with every other restriction he has and with how controlled he is with his life even outside of that, it’s his one little indulgence, a pressure-relief valve of one bad choice to let some steam off at the end of a season, when he carves out time in his cottage when he can make his annual bad choice and enjoy a few days of wild mango madness before he makes himself buckle back into the restraints he usually keeps his life in.
He looks up when he hears Rozanov snort.
“Mangoes?” Rozanov repeats, tugging his shirt over his head. “Really?”
“They’re good,” Shane defends. “Better than vodka,” he adds, pointedly.
(shane has food allergies but makes an exception for mangoes) (5 times ilya didn't find out about this allergy and 1 time he did)

Bookmarker's Notes
“But,” Ilya says, “no more, yes? No more sex mangoes.”
Shane is quiet for what is probably just a moment too long, wondering if he should go ahead and differentiate between sex mangoes and End of Season Celebratory Bad Choice Mangoes. He has the sneaking suspicion Ilya isn’t going to be too pleased by the distinction.
“Shane?” Ilya prompts, sounding a little less indulgent now. “No more mangoes, yes?”
“No more sex mangoes,” he agrees, which is something he can promise. It’s not a good idea during the season, after all, so it’s not a bad idea to have the temptation off the table now.
…his annual Mango Time on the other hand…

Summary
It does mean missing out on things like barbeques and team dinners sometimes, but it’s not as if he would have been able to participate anyway. At this point in his life, risking someone not taking his allergies seriously would mean potentially missing games, which makes it unacceptable. Jackie always makes sure he has a dish or two that’s safe when he’s over at their house, but if he was going to be the one guy sitting and drinking ginger ale instead of taking part in sharing nachos or Korean barbeque or burgers or any other delicious thing he goes in knowing he can’t have anyway, there’s no point in making a fuss about it. He eats at home, has a drink with everyone else, and he calls it a day. Easy. Safe. Foolproof.
But also the reason it doesn’t occur to him that he hasn’t actually told Ilya about any of his allergies until it becomes immediately relevant five days into being at his cottage together.
(how ilya learns about shane's food allergies) (and how shane learns what it's like to have someone who always saves him a seat at the table) (and who also makes sure there's food he can eat on the table to start with)

Bookmarker's Notes
“I said I don’t eat peanuts,” Shane points out. “And I asked you not to eat it then.”
“You did not tell me why!” Ilya says. “I thought it was just-” A flick of his hand in Shane’s general direction. “Hollander thing. Like how-” He stops short, eyes narrowing. “The condoms.”
“Yes?” Shane prompts, a little thrown.
“You always bring yours and refuse to use other ones. Is allergy thing?”
“Yeah,” Shane says with a shrug. “I’m allergic to latex.”
Ilya closes his eyes like he’s praying and folds forward, pressing his hands to his face for a moment. When he speaks, he looks up at Shane from over his fingers.
“And you did not think to mention this? At any point? In literally fucking years of knowing each other? ‘Hey, Rozanov, by the way, there are many things that can kill me. You should know about them, maybe.’”
Well…when he says it like that.
