Ren's years end where they begin, on a train heading to Tokyo on April 9th.
He is not who he was, not quite. He's lived too many lives, died too many deaths, mourned too many loves. Yaldaboath twists the world each time the cycle starts anew and neither Trickster nor God could say what the world they first came from looks like anymore.
Ren starts the year over in a timeline doomed from the beginning and decides he's needs a rest. A short vacation before he skips ahead to the next year and the next chance to put an end to Yaldaboath once and for all.
Goro Akechi has other ideas.

“You kissed Kurusu?!” Cookies crumbs went flying as she spoke but Ann didn’t care. The news was just too big to be taken in calmly. Makoto had suspected that Kurusu, a known criminal, was a pawn in Akechi’s devious plan and the rest of the group had been thinking the same. Morgana suggested that the dark haired boy might even be the new player they’d been warned about.
At no point at any of them considered Akechi could be so human as to simply just like Kurusu.

Well.
How on earth was he supposed to kill such a charming, polite young woman when she came to him with such an interesting request such as that?

Summary
Ren didn’t make a move towards her, no attempt to reach out and help her, no offered apologies for scaring her so badly. Just stood there, still as a statue with shoulders hunched awkwardly up around his ears. His head was dipped down towards the floor, chin nearly to his chest. His face was obscured by the odd angle and the wild mess of his dark hair. His clothes, too, were wrong. A frayed and thin jumpsuit, black and white stripes, a shackle on each wrists as they hung limply by his sides. There were heavy chains hanging from them, pooling at his bare feet.
Something was wrong.

The next morning she woke from a nightmare she could remember - an eden gone rotten, her hands covered in blood, Maruki standing over her looking beatific as he held out a still beating heart to her to take, a body in black and blue still spasming under her hands - and spent twenty minutes curled over her toilet dry heaving. The thought she still refused to acknowledge circled like a shark, smelling blood. She punched it in the nose and hurried through her morning routine as quickly as she could. Managing, somehow, to skitter away to school before Morgana could corner her about a doctor’s appointment once more.
The god was back in her room a few nights later.

Summary
On January 9th Akechi and Joker, make their way through the palace together as tensions run high and their ability to cooperate drops by the second. Not only is it difficult to deal with the powerful shadows that assail them at every turn, but having to fight against your own emotions and words being turned against you while trying to survive is just as much of a struggle.
(Or Akechi throws a tantrum after getting hit by "fear" and Joker has to deal with the consequences.)
