This is so tender. This version of Ryland is very pent up and unsure, but also endearing. Which is a perfect fit with the way that Simon is characterized as unendingly loyal, a man with dedication that knows no bounds. They are just so soft together here.
Then you throw Rocky in, a little shit stirrer with a heart of gold and no time for these two aliens to figure shit out. He is a number one wingbeing. He’s learning curse words from Simon and then turning around and being squeamish about them coupling. Duality of man, or rock I guess.
It is funny to see how different people headcanon Rocky. Some are like, that guy is a scientist, he would want to study this mating ritual. Then there are ones like this that have him being respectful of their boundaries. I honestly think the difference is whether the author read the PHM book or not. Either way, I enjoy every iteration.
