When you have a fever, you go soft.
First the bones give way. The proud frame collapses, the spine curls into the duvet, folding into a small, stubborn shape that refuses to ask for help.
Then the lips soften—the dry, cracked lips that can’t quite manage a cutting remark. All they can murmur is one word: cold.
And finally, the hand. That hand that plays the violin, that conducts experiments, that points at a crime scene and says “elementary.”
It slips out from under the duvet and catches the fabric of his shirt.
It holds on so gently and yet so tightly.
Not with the usual controlled composure.
But the way a drowning man grabs at driftwood—no technique, only instinct.
Clutching his shirttail. His sleeve. His collar.
It holds on all night long. It doesn’t let go until dawn.
All night he calls his name.
And all night the other answers, “I’m here.”
The truth is, the fever has made him half delirious; he doesn’t even know what he’s calling for.
But each time he calls, a warm hand reaches out and rests on his forehead.
It stays there until he quiets, then slowly withdraws.

This story diverges at the end of season 3. There is no Eurus (thank you very much).

A residence becomes a civil partnership. A civil partnership becomes a marriage. The marriage becomes the one room in his life he did not design and cannot control.

The story published under the title of The Empty House had a great deal of truth in it. Ronald Adair was shot through a window by Sebastian Moran wielding an air rifle. Holmes sprung a trap to catch him in a vacant building that overlooked 221B Baker Street.
But I was not by his side in that silent, brooding darkness. Indeed, had it not been for the diligence of the British press, I may have been none the wiser. For Holmes, in his haste to conclude that dreadful business, had not seen fit to inform me of his return.

It has been two years since Sherlock Holmes faked his death-dive off the roof of St Bartholmew’s Hospital (“The Reichenbach Fall”). This story continues from the point in “The Empty Hearse” in which a very much alive Sherlock Holmes has returned (disguised as a French waiter) and revealed himself to John Watson (in a hilariously appalling manner), disrupting John’s dinner date with Mary Morstan—the woman to whom John was about to propose marriage.
From this point forward, we enter an alternate Sherlock storyline, in which John’s life takes a different turn.
