Summary
Somehow Bucky got fully over him on the floor, laying with his forearm over Gale’s left arm and across his shoulders, putting all his weight on him and trapped Gale’s right arm with his other hand. Bucky’s weight pressed him into the ground on all four of his limbs. He went to try to throw Bucky off and realized in a horrible second that he couldn’t move an inch. He was beat. And Bucky was piss drunk for Christ’s sake. His eyes finally focused on Bucky’s, inches from his face, still, pupils blown wide in the low light. Suddenly it felt like the air was alive with static in the dry Texas heat. The zing of it went down his spine and settled low in his stomach. That horrible tense silence stretched another beat, and Gale felt like a trapped animal, caught, humiliated, and buzzing with a feeling he didn’t recognize. He felt his blood rushing, that hot adrenaline fighting flush. With horror, he realized just where his blood was going.

Summary
Bucky Egan and his fellow menace-in-arms Marge Spencer can’t stop staring at the sun-bleached Earthboy working behind the counter of their favourite spacer haunt at Bryant's Station. That’s how trouble always starts on port calls, right?

"How does a Motherwell man with no funding make his way to fuckin' Bryant's?" The bartender's golden brows furrow.
"I worked my way here."
"Why?" Marge asks, but Egan is at it again with the incessant need to be on top, practically lying on the red-lacquered counter so he could be face-to-face with the bartender.
"Oh yeah? Doing what, Mister Earth?" The Earth is a sneer, a slur, a reference to all things unnecessary.
"I’m a pilot that can do a bit of navigation. Every ship needs those skills."
Marge and Egan both laugh now, a synchrony one octave apart. Egan, Helm and pilot of the militia ship Three Times Lucky, tasked with protecting the merchant routes against the lurking pirates. Marge, who had sat as the youngest full-fledged Navigator that the trader Grace had seen in generations.
"Right, right," Egan cackles. "Pilot and navigator and researcher? Buck, stop, my panties are soaking wet."

Bucky flees into the arms of the army to make something out of his life. Gale joins it to prove to the world that he can succeed regardless of his sub-gender. They meet. Bucky baptizes him Buck. Things become more complicated from then on.

Sunset cannons. The boom of it sends a flock of crows cawing and rustling out of the trees overhead. Gale wishes it would scare the geese making a muck of his nice, neat cemetery so easily, but alas. He’ll just have to get more creative with his methods, but that’s a problem for the morning.
Much softer and closer at hand, footsteps approach almost silently over densely layered pine needles and scattered twigs, and Gale looks up from the magazine he’s not really bothering to read so he can watch his own personal miracle emerge from wherever he goes when they’re not together, a vision dressed casually in jeans and a t-shirt. He is, of course, already yapping, picking up the same thread they’d left on last night right at dusk when he’d disappeared again as usual.

He wants to chuckle at the disgruntled sleepy bunny look on Gale’s face, like John had committed the biggest sin by leaving the bed. A chilled hand shoves at his bicep before Gale climbs into the stall, truly it is not big enough for both of them, but neither of them care right now. Two long arms wind around his waist to pull his body into Gale’s front, his face tucks into John’s throat to nuzzle close.
John will never admit to it, but a half asleep or freshly woken up Gale was one of his favorite versions, only because his guard wasn’t up and he was cuddly. It had taken John a long time to realize that Gale doesn’t seek comfort through touch the way he does, Gale looks for comfort by someone else just being there with him. Even if Gale will suffer in silence, he seems to like to do it with John right by his side, which is something John will do until the end of time.

“It doesn’t sound like my sort of environment, Marge,” Gale says, picking up an astrophysics textbook that pushes the bounds of what a single-handed grip is capable of. It strains the tendons in his wrist as he tries not to drop it on the way to its new home in the built-in bookshelf. The edges of it are bloated, almost rubbery with how many times it’s been painted over in the same shade of white, a few spots chipped away to show rich brown wood underneath.

He keeps missing his mom's calls, a moustachioed cop keeps tailing him around town, and a week ago, two Brits beat him up for no reason outside his apartment. When Gale smashes a backhand, and Egan lunges for it, but the quick bounce spins it just past his racket, he stumbles, catches himself on his hands with his racket clattering against the hard court, and he starts laughing, wet and winded—laughing still as he straightens up, cheeks reddened, glistening under the sun. He scrubs the back of his wrist, his black sweatband, over his forehead.
“See? You love it when I make your dad mad.”
“Egan,” Gale warns, but all the authority is lost in his panting. Egan wipes his forehead again, racket tapping his thigh.
“Missed playing with you, Buck.”
“We played two weeks ago, in Cincinnati. C’mon, still your serve.”

Gale meets John Egan at a Challenger in Bordeaux when they're both 19 years old. After that, he can't seem to shake him. But what's more is, despite what his dad says about Gale's game, and what the commentators say about their rivalry, and what he's been told about tennis his whole life, Gale doesn't think he wants to.
