In the fix-it stories where Valjean saves Javert, it is very easy to see what Valjean has done for Javert. But in this one, you can see how Javert saves Valjean right back by not letting him martyr himself for Cosette’s supposed ‘happiness’. I just love how Javert thinks of and speaks to Marius, so spot on.
