Work Text:

River sighed, pacing back and forward and fidgeting slowly with the wire off the payphone.

Of course her stupid husband wouldn't pick up.

She dropped the phone, letting it bounce on the wire, like a technology bungee jump. She sighed, running a hand through her messy curls.

Of all the days for her husband to be a stubborn ass, and not pick up the phone, it had to be the day where she had broken out of a fucking library and was now being arrested by stupid but well meaning security guards, in the stupid fucking library.

Her cuffs rattled as she threw her hands up in exasperation. The sudden movement made the two guards flinch, and she gave them a sugary sharp smile.

"Sorry Loves, won't be a second, just need my stupid husband to pick up the damn phone."

They sighed impatiently, but ultimately removed their hands from their blasters.

River went back to pacing. She could hear the ringing tone of the phone drone on, and on as her idiot husband ignored the phone in his fucking phone box.

Irratable, she dug into her pockets grabbing her lipstick. She reapplied it with a smug grin.

"How does it look loves?"

She pursed her lips together and fluttered her eyes at them.

One of them looked unamused and their face didn't really change, the scales shifting darker to show their displeasure. The other guard, well they were another story entirely.

Their berry toned skin flushed a pale blue, and they ducked their head in embarrassment.

"Looks lovely on you."

Their voice was quiet and they shrunk further in on themselves when their partner shot them an unamused look.

"Thanks, Love." her grin softened slightly, they were kinda cute, especially that blush. Hmm, maybe after she reunites with her husband.

Speaking of the devil, a loud, familiar scraping noise echoed through the small space, a pulsing warm light, highlighting the grin on River's face.

Finally!

She took a step back into the slightly holographic blue box that was phasing in and out in time with the noise.

She gave the two stunned looking guards a small wave and salute, laughing almost manicly when the ship matirialised around her.

"Now what time do you call this, Honey? You've never been this late before!"

She spun around taking in her surroundings, the tardis had certainly changed since the last time she'd stolen her.

"Have you redecorated dear?"

She took in the hexagons and glowing crystal-like structures. It liked like a crystal cave, if the cave had been turned into a partially sentient time machine.

"Oh she's beautiful dear!" River spun around once more, her eyes wide with awe. It was then that she noticed the strangers watching her. Huh, these are new.

"New face?" she hummed lightly taking in the four people in front of her. One was significantly older than the rest, his short silver hair and wrinkles showing that, plain as day. Now, with the Doctor's old faces, she would assume that was him, but she knew her husband, in mannerisms if not his face.

She knew her husband, or should she say spouse? She grinned before bounding towards the short jittering blonde lady, or her wife if you wanted to be precise.

"Hello, Dear! I see you've had an upgrade!" she wiped off her lipstick with the makeup wipes she kept on hand for this reason. "I was starting to think you wouldn't show up, I was about to resort to, drastic measures." she wiggled her eyebrows and gestured to the makeup wipe she had in her hand. "Anyway won't you int-"

"River?"

The Doctor's voice was quiet and shaky and River looked down at her with a smile.

"What's wrong darling? You miss me or somthing? Oof-"

She was cut off as the Doctor threw herself at her, embracing her with a sob.

River's face, which had been teasing her fondly, now switched rapidly to concern.

"Oh, Dear, um," she put her arms around her, embracing her softly like how a child would hold a snowflake, softly and full of hope. She looked over towards the other three people on the ship. "Is this somthing she normally does in this body?"

The three companions shook their head dumbly, all looking various degrees of concerned. The silver one spoke up,

"Um, Sorry to uh interrupt, but who exactly are you? I'm Graham, this is Ryan, my Grandson and Yasmin."

"Nice to meet you all! She's certainly collected a few of you all this time."

River reached a hand up to the Doctor's head, carding a hand through her straight blonde hair, her other hand gently rubbing the Doctor's shaking back.

"Hey darlin, can you look at me please, you're making my bra wet, and as much as I'd like to take it off, I don't particularly want to scar your new companions."

The Doctor giggled lightly, lifting her face slightly from where it had been buried in her wife's chest.

"Ooh, Darling you have got a beautiful face this time, didn't you! Absolutely ravashing my dear! " She pushed a strand of blonde hair behind the Doctor's ear, gently smoothing away tear tracks with her thumb. "You always get so lucky with this regeneration lottery, don't you hun!"

She stepped back from her wife, removing herself from the hug regretfully.

"Now my love, I belive, how we usually do this is compare diaries, but I seem to have misplaced mine, last I saw you was in the... The library."

She saw the way The Doctor flinched and felt her heart sink. The Doctor's head shot up, and she stared River in the eyes. Deep in her eyes there was a glimmer of hope.

" You've been to the Libary? "

" Yes I have My Love, been there, stayed for a little while, twas terribly boring honestly!" She winked at her wife, ignoring how the thought of the library made her chest feel all too tight.

"You've been to the Libary!" The Doctor laughed with delight, throwing her head backwards in joy!

With a small cry, the Doctor launched herself at River again, their lips colliding together, as the doctor kissed her with heartbreaking passion.

River made a surprised noise, before smiling into the kiss. She kissed back with vigor, taking control of the kiss with ease. They broke apart panting lightly.

River let out a whistle.

"What a warm welcome!" she smiled before stepping backwards away from her clingy wife. "But I am not going to traumatise your new companions like this, there's much better ways to do that after all~"

She grinned towards Yasmin, her smile widening at her blush.

"I think I'm going to have fun traumatising this bunch!"
