Chapter Text
“You’re making me do a fucking escort job?”
“After the shit that you just pulled, I shouldn’t even be letting you do that much!” A tall male with silver hair and a thin frame all but threw the paperwork in his hand down onto the table, eyes glaring through the man sitting back in one of the metal fold out chairs seated on the opposite side from where he stood. The shorter man looked completely unaffected by the scolding. “Yoongi you amputated someone’s fucking child.”
“Because there was a demon!” Yoongi sat upright in his chair, the legs thumping against the floor as it was brought into it's proper position. “I told her to get out of there but she didn’t fucking listen to me. If anything, I should be thanked for getting her out of there alive, Namjoon.”
“That was a B rank demon. You of all people should have been able to handle it with no problems.” Yoongi opened his mouth to retort but Namjoon held a hand up to cut him off. “No. No, I don’t want to hear it.” He stabbed a finger down on the paperwork he had been holding and gave a stern look to Yoongi. “This. This is your last chance. You’re gonna take this assignment and you’re going to do it with no problems. No amputated children, no building damage, no making deals with the demons and so help me god if I find out you fuck this demon---”
“--That happened once and I was possessed--”
“--Doesn’t matter!” Namjoon looked one breath away from snapping. “No problems! That’s all I’m asking! Can you do that?”
Yoongi stared flatly at his boss, the two sitting in a long silent stare down until he finally scoffed and rolled his eyes. He leaned forward and reached for the new assignment that Namjoon had for him, the man pushing it towards him. Yoongi took one look at the rank and immediately clicked his tongue. “A D rank?”
Namjoon raised his eyebrows, his chin protruded. His expression was just asking Yoongi to make the wrong comment. “Yup.”
“You can’t be fucking serious-- ‘Go and retrieve person from trauma site?’ This is like intern level, what the fuck?” Yoongi had a look of offense on his face, not even bothering to read the details of the mission.
Namjoon placed both hands on either side of the table, leaning close to Yoongi’s face. “This is your last chance to really get your shit together, Yoongi. I am basically handing this one to you so please.” He paused for a moment, his head tilting just a bit as he really seemed to beg Yoongi to do this right. “Please don’t fuck this up. Just get the kid and bring him back here, no extra shit.”
Yoongi refused to meet his gaze for a long moment even though he could feel Namjoon staring at him. His eyes fell to the file, skimming over the site where he had to retrieve the person in question and found himself letting out a deep sigh. “Fine.” He mumbled.
Namjoon took in a deep breath and straightened his posture, nodding his head. “Okay.” He commented, giving Yoongi one last look before turning towards the door and exiting their briefing room.
Yoongi ran his tongue over his teeth, feeling a bit sour at the lack of faith his boss had in him. He picked up the file, his eyes catching the mark engraved into the back of his hand. His gaze lingered on the unfamiliar sigil carved into his skin, attention slipping from him as past memories attempted to surface. There was a rush of guilt that shot through him but he quickly stomped the emotion down, slapping the file down on the table and moving to grab his equipment for the mission.
///
Yoongi found himself strolling up to a barely standing building only three hours after his briefing. He had his hands shoved into his bomber jacket, tongue digging into his cheek as he stared at the damage in front of him. He wouldn’t have been able to tell what the building used to be prior to it meeting it’s demise if the file hadn’t informed him that it was on an old records shop. How those things had even survived this long was beyond him, but Yoongi chose not to focus on it.
Apparently somewhere deep in this rubble was a demon who had a human in their possession and for whatever reason unbeknownst to Yoongi, that was a problem their agency couldn’t pass up. Yoongi huffed out a deep sigh, kicking over one of the rocks that used to be a part of the building. He clicked his tongue and stepped forward, eyes on alert for any movement unnatural to him.
Yoongi came with the equipment he normally had--a jian sword strapped across his back and a semi-automatic pistol resting in the holster strapped around his thigh. If Namjoon caught him on the way out the door, he would’ve been reprimanded for not properly gearing up for the condemned zone but Yoongi had his own way of doing things.
The area of the city he was in fell just outside the border of the condemned zone. If Yoongi's memory served him right, this takeover was something had happened relatively recently. Maybe only a few years ago if he had to guess. The condemned zone was just a fancy way of informing people that there were demons running rampant inside and while the agency he worked for did a hell of a job decreasing the size of the zone, there were still not enough hunters to completely wipe out their enemy. The fact that it was just outside the border meant there was a chance that multiple demons might have slipped out and could be hiding around.
Yoongi kept the thought in mind, eyes catching the quick movement of a shadow out to his left. He turned his head to follow the movement and spotted the lowest class of demon they had on record. They were so small and harmless that there had been arguments with society in allowing them as exotic pets, but it was a little surprising for one to be found out here.
Another thing for Yoongi to keep in mind. He brought his attention away from the small creature and turned his attention back to the blasted building in front of him. It was darker in this area than he would’ve liked, the power for this district shut off years ago when it had been run over. Yoongi sighed as he found himself in front of the blasted open wall that had been described in his file. Whatever had caused that damage definitely wasn't a demon as low class as the one he'd stumbled upon a moment ago. If a human had actually been caught in that, he wondered if they could even survive it. What the fuck was a human doing all the way out here by themselves, anyway?
Yoongi climbed up the pile of rubble laid out at the entrance and peered into the darkness. “You wanna make this easy on me and just get out here? I’m really not in the mood to climb today.” He yelled out, listening for any noises that could give his target away. To no surprise, nothing responded to him. Yoongi huffed a heavy sigh as he started to cautiously step over the rubble, loose rocks tumbling away with his weight as he did so. He eyed the opening that something had created in this building with suspicion, the walls looking one breath shy from collapsing in on itself. Still, Namjoon’s voice rang in his head reminding him that he had a job to do.
“Alright let’s see where this little bastard is hiding…” Yoongi mumbled to himself, stepping into the building. It was considerably darker inside with no light source to guide him, but he continued on unfazed. His ears picked up what had to be the sounds of mice or possibly low-ranking demons scurrying about, but there were still no signs of a bigger demon or even human for that matter. Whatever caused the damage to this building hadn’t been reported and Namjoon didn’t seem to be bothered by it from what information he had. Yoongi was just left to assume that the bigger problem had been taken care of.
He delved deeper into the building feeling slightly uneasy with how far in he had to go. If the building started to fall, he wasn’t sure he was going to be able to make it out safely. Yoongi licked his lips, squinting as if it would make it easier to walk around. He found himself bumping into a rack of old albums and knocking it over. The noise startled him, echoing throughout but doing nothing otherwise. Yoongi hissed to himself, but immediately froze upon catching the sound of what had to have been ruffling cloth. He strained his ears for the noise again, and after a long moment of silence, Yoongi tried to rely on his memory of where the sound came from. He followed the path he heard the noise from and brought a hand to the wall, gently running his fingers along it until he met a doorway. His eyes took a moment to adjust, the sliver of light that seeped into the room giving depth to what was in it.
Yoongi froze, holding his breath when he recognized the silhouette sitting in front of the broken window. It looked like a human form but he couldn’t be too sure. A hand fell to the hilt of his blade, ready to draw it at the first sign of trouble. He raised a brow at how still the body was, a part of him wondering if the demon hadn’t gone and murdered the missing human already. Maybe it was a corpse he was staring at right now.
“You normally just sit here basking in the moonlight or is this a special occasions kind of thing?” Yoongi commented, watching as the body tensed to his voice. In most situations he dealt with, any human would be running to him and kissing his feet while rambling about how scared they were and how great of a hero he was. This one didn’t seem to follow the norm.
“Go away.”
Oh, it was a human.
“Yeah see, I’m not gonna do that,” Yoongi’s tone was mildly annoyed but his body was on guard. “I got a job to do and part of that job entails me bringing you out of here so why don’t you make it easy on me and not put up a fight, alright?”
The man’s shoulders visibly sank as he heaved out a heavy breath. He didn’t say anything for a minute but when he did his voice was barely a whisper. “So does that mean you’re a demon hunter?”
“Nah, I’m actually here with the local cable provider. Wanted to come in and check up on how you liked your service. Any complaints? Signal good?” Yoongi raised an eyebrow, watching as the man stood from his spot and turned towards him. He was taken by surprise with the young face he was met with, scrapes littering the man’s skin. There was a particularly deep one on his cheek bone, the blood clumped over the surface of the gash.
The man ignored his comment, pursing his lips together and showcasing a single dimple as he huffed out a breath. He dropped his head and started to move towards Yoongi. Yoongi’s grip tightened around the hilt of his blade, eyes glued to every slight movement he made.
“I’m supposed to come with you, aren’t I?” The man mumbled, looking over Yoongi’s shoulder.
Yoongi side stepped to let the man pass and nodded for him to go ahead. He was met with a suspicious look but responded with a stern gaze of his own. It was enough to get him moving, Yoongi knowing better than to show his back to anyone or anything after doing this job for so long. “The hell is a kid like you doing sitting in the middle of a crumbling building?” He questioned not bothering to answer the man’s previous question.
Yoongi stared at the back in front of him, catching a few rips in his shirt and wondering what kind of fight he got into to come out looking like this. He waited for an answer but only received a shrug. He rolled his eyes in response, grip still tight on his hilt. “Name?”
“Jungkook.”
“Any chance you spot any demons around here, Jungkook?” Yoongi questioned, wiping his thumb along his lower lip as he followed him through the building. Jungkook was familiar with the layout he noticed. He even managed to avoid the rack of records Yoongi had bumped into earlier.
Jungkook scoffed at his question. “Have I spotted any demons…” He repeated with a tone that had too much snark in it for Yoongi’s liking. Jungkook shook his head, not bothering to respond.
It may have sent a rush of irritation through Yoongi to be ignored like that. He climbed over the rubble after Jungkook, eyes scanning the area around them as they stepped back out into the open. Jungkook stepped into a clearing and then turned to face Yoongi with what he could only describe as an expression only a brat would make. “Where to?”
“No where yet,” Yoongi replied, eyes once again scanning over the area. He was quick to catch on how the low level demons seemed to multiply around them. They weren’t being shy either which bothered him. If that wasn’t enough to worry about, Yoongi swore he could feel eyes on them. This was supposed to be a simple mission but his gut was telling him that he had a lot more to worry about than he initially anticipated. His eyes fell back to the battered brunette staring at him expectantly. “What were you doing out here?”
Jungkook’s eyes dropped at the question, the man refusing to meet Yoongi’s gaze after that. There was a flash of what Yoongi liked to call an emotional-trauma flashback in his expression as he looked away. Yoongi let out a long sigh, bringing a hand to his face to rub over his eyes.
“Okay listen,” He started flicking his hand towards him. “This demon came and fucked up your easy-goin’ life right? What happened? Watched your best friend get their guts ripped out?” Jungkook’s expression scrunched tighter but it wasn’t the cue Yoongi was looking for. “Significant other have their head popped off?” Still not the cue. “Demon swoop in and slaughter your family?” There it was. Jungkook shook his head and snapped his eyes closed, turning his entire body away from Yoongi. “Ouch, hit the nail on the head on that one, huh?”
“You treat all your victims like this?” Jungkook forced out and Yoongi couldn’t help but to roll his eyes at the strain in his voice. Even when Yoongi used to care he had never been good with dealing with freshly traumatized victims.
“You’re not a victim, you’re a paycheck.” Yoongi commented, earning a scoff of a laugh from Jungkook. He completely glossed over it and went back to his point from before. “So this demon came in and wiped out your family but left you alive? Doesn’t make sense.” Yoongi stepped around Jungkook, bending forward to get a look at the expression he was hiding. Teary eyed, no surprise there. “This leaves me assuming a few things--” Yoongi raised a hand, his index finger out. “--You were hiding when the demon murdered your family--” He raised another finger “--you somehow managed to kill the demon--” A third finger raised. “-- or for some reason unbeknownst to me, this demon fled before finishing it’s job.” He straightened his posture, standing in front of Jungkook now. “Am I wrong?”
“I don’t know what happened to the fucking demon.” Jungkook snapped out, voice strained with more anger than pain at this point.
Yoongi rolled his eyes, disappointed with how useless Jungkook’s information was. He nodded his head at him, gaze dragging over his appearance. “You look pretty worn out, that happen during the attack?”
Jungkook dragged a hand over his face and shook his head like he was trying to block the question out. “I don’t know, I can’t remember--” He cut off, the sound of screeching interrupting him. The two of them snapped their heads to the direction it came from. Jungkook’s eyes widened to the size of saucers, but Yoongi just looked annoyed.
There was a demon that Yoongi had mentally classified as ‘deformed-bat’ flapping towards them. It wasn’t the only one, a handful of them coming out from the shadows of the buildings around them and making their way towards them. Yoongi immediately drew the blade strapped to his back and stepped in front of Jungkook. Normally he wouldn’t care for the kid’s safety but he was part of the mission process and Namjoon’s voice was making too many appearances in his mind.
Most of the people that carried around blades were usually well-trained in using it. Yoongi had been self-taught with the one that he carried and what that really meant was that he used it more like a bludgeoning weapon than a sword. He wasn’t graceful or swift with it like one might imagine. Yoongi rolled his shoulder as he cautiously stepped closer to the flapping bat thing that was coming towards them. He knocked his head from side to side until his neck popped and then with a swift swing he sliced the creature straight in half.
A loud hissing noise followed its death, its body dropping from the air like a dead fly and black flames self-combusting from it and consuming it. Jungkook watched with big eyes as more began flying towards them, Yoongi swatting at them almost effortlessly. It was like watching someone at the batting cages. These bat demons were dropping left and right, hissing their last breath as Yoongi took them out one by one.
Jungkook turned his attention away from the scene in front of him and looked over his shoulder, his mouth falling open to the sight of more unfamiliar demons coming their way. “Uh…” He started, having a hard time pulling his eyes away from the sight. “H-Hey there’s--” Jungkook turned to meet the demon hunter’s gaze, swallowing a lump in his throat as he watched him rip a wing clean off one of the creatures and then throw its body at another one.
Yoongi huffed as he turned to see what Jungkook wanted, his entire body deflating at the sight of more lower level demons basically flopping their way towards him. “What the fuck…” He groaned as he examined the amount coming towards them. This had already gone from a D rank mission up into a B, but if these demons kept appearing like this, Yoongi would throw that right on up to the high A ranks. He turned his head back towards where the bats had come from, only a few left from the group he handled, but it was more than he wanted to spend energy on.
Yoongi ran his tongue over his lip as he scanned the area around them. If they ran they could probably get to the populated part of the city in a good twenty to thirty minutes. Demons wouldn't typically follow anyone into a crowd of humans due to how dangerous of a situation that would be for them. It seemed like the best plan but that also meant running. “C’mon.” He heaved, moving towards the direction of the city. Jungkook jogged to catch up with him and then looked over his shoulder at the amount of demons wheezing and making their way towards them. Yoongi slipped his jian back into its hilt and wiped away the sweat from his brow. “They should stop following us once we get out of sight.” Jungkook pulled his eyes away from the demons and let them settle on Yoongi. He seemed confident with the answer so he had no choice but to trust him.
///
The cluster of demons should have stopped following them but it seemed no matter what they did or where they went, the demons kept on their tail. Yoongi was getting more and more irritated by the second, knowing that if this kept up, he would be leading an entire pack of demons into a populated area. He knew that'd be endgame for these creatures but the way the people would react is what was stressing him out. That scenario was something Yoongi mentally classified as one of Namjoon's absolute no-no's. He'd have his head for doing such a thing. The demons going into a crowd of humans wasn't what worried Yoongi. It was the fact that they were acting so abnormal that had him tense. Jungkook seemed just as worried, frequently checking over their shoulder and watching them clamber towards them.
“For fucks sake,” Yoongi snapped, turning on his heel and stomping his way towards the pack. He pointed a finger at Jungkook. “Don’t you move a muscle.” He commanded. Jungkook rolled his eyes but otherwise did as was told.
The impatient part of Yoongi wanted to pull his gun from its place in his holster, but he tried to save that for emergencies or more powerful demons since he had a limited stock of bullets on him. He pulled his sword out again, the irritation in him replacing the lack of energy he had to deal with this amount of low levels. Yoongi took in a deep breath before rotating the blade in his hand and delivering the first demon he encountered with an upward cut. He easily readjusted his grip and stabbed it straight through the head of the next one to pass him then snapped it downward to slice through a third.
Yoongi brought the blade back to his side, his position immediately relaxing as he watched the demons completely ignore him and pass by like he wasn’t important. He straightened his posture and blinked, confusion taking over his features as he watched them all move around Yoongi and completely disregard him. If they weren't already ating abnormal, this would definitely mark them as such. Yoongi turned around to follow their path, head tilting at the way they fluttered towards Jungkook.
Jungkook stood in place with a look of surprise and a tinge of fear on his face, hesitating to take a step backwards as they began to approach him. Yoongi watched with curiosity as they approached him with no ill-intent. Jungkook snapped his wide eyes up to Yoongi as if to ask for help as they all…settled around him. Yoongi clicked his tongue against his teeth, eyes narrowing in on the scene. “What the fuck is this snow white bullshit…?”
Jungkook’s skin had gone pale, the ripped and oversized sweater he was wearing making him look smaller than he was as he balled his hands into tight fists. He opened his mouth to say something, but only ended up stammering as the demons settled around him.
Yoongi ran a hand along his brow, putting his sword away and scoffing. “Okay, I guess I’m dealing with this now…” He rocked his head back and fourth as he approached the cluster of obedient demons, testing the waters and kicking one as he approached. It wasn’t even bothered by it, immediately readjusting itself back into place. He let his gaze scan over the group before dragging them up to Jungkook and eyeing him suspiciously.
He didn’t think Jungkook’s eyes could get any wider but they did. He seemed to sense the suspicion that Yoongi had for him, immediately stammering for words. “I-I--"
Yoongi narrowed his gaze on him. “--What the fuck is this?”
“--I don’t know--” Jungkook jumped when one of the demons hopped up at him, attention snapping from the creature back to Yoongi.
Yoongi felt his skin crawl with warning that something clearly wasn’t right but the longer he stared at the panicked expression on Jungkook’s face, the more he knew that he had little to do with it. There was something else going on and it didn’t make him feel any better that he could still feel pairs of eyes on them. If they had lower level demons following them like this, he didn’t want to think about the possibility of high classes hiding out and watching them from the abandoned buildings surrounding them.
Yoongi took in a deep breath and mulled over the situation. There was no way he could knowingly take Jungkook through the city with demons flooding in after them. Namjoon would personally assist in his death if he did something like that. Yoongi groaned, knowing that there was really only one way to move forward from here. He was going to have to call this in.
“I can’t take you through the fucking city.” Yoongi started, eyes skimming over the buildings around them. If they were being watched by other demons as well it’d be in their best interest to camp out until he could get an assessment on the situation. He spotted an opening in an old barber shop and started making his way there. “Come on.”
Jungkook hesitated to follow, unsure of how to move through the small cluster of demons at his feet but they quickly parted for him as he took a step forward. He tried to shake the uncomfortable feeling off, watching Yoongi struggle with the rusted door to the barber shop until he resorted to kicking it in. It snapped open, bouncing off the wall and swinging back only for Yoongi stop it with his arm. He turned and held it open for Jungkook to step through, kicking away the demons following him and shutting the door to keep them from coming in.
It was hard to see inside the building, the windows having been boarded up and keeping most of the light out. Jungkook moved slow, waving a hand in front of him until he bumped into a chair. He spun it around so that he could sit in it, coughing when a dust cloud greeted him as he sat down.
Yoongi stayed by the door, watching the way the demons just threw themselves into it and bounced around. He hadn’t seen anything like this before and he had been dealing with demons for the better part of seven years now. He turned away from the door and stared into the open dark building, the hair on the back of his neck standing up. It suddenly didn’t feel like the best area for them to have stopped.
Yoongi waited for his eyes to adjust, fingers dropping to the buckle that held his gun in place. He could hear Jungkook breathing and bouncing his foot as the chair squeaked quietly with the movement but there was something beyond that that left him feeling in danger. He took in a breath, moving his hand to his pocket instead and withdrawing his phone. If anything was going wrong it would be best to call things in now before he didn’t get the chance to.
“What's on your hand?” Yoongi turned to meet Jungkook’s gaze, confused by his question. He spotted the man staring at the back of his hand as he held his phone out.
He always forgot he had that mark there so the question took him by surprise. Yoongi turned on his heel, his back facing Jungkook. He intentionally moved his hand out of the man’s sight, completely ignoring his question.
Jungkook sighed in defeat at the reaction. His foot continued to bounce against the stool, the repeating squeak of the metal like a metronome to Yoongi. Yoongi chewed on his lower lip, contemplating who he should call for this. Namjoon would probably tear him apart for it even if this was something completely out of his control. There was his friend in the incidents department that could help but Yoongi hated the thought of owing that man a favor. Still, he was in a bit of a situation and there wasn’t anything he could do to move forward until he received some kind of direction.
Yoongi scrolled through his contacts until his eyes landed on the name he was looking for. His thumb hovered over the contact, his entire body freezing up as an icy chill ran down his spine. Yoongi glanced up from his phone, spotting the slightest movement of a shadow just over his shoulder.
The squeaking of the metal completely stopped as Jungkook’s bouncing foot went still. He must’ve been able to sense something too based on the way he suddenly started looking around himself. Yoongi glanced back down to his phone and quickly hit call on his contact. The name “Seok Jin” lit up the screen as the line struggled to connect. The second he hit the call button, that shadow over his shoulder became a large presence in the room with them. Yoongi barely had enough time to reach behind his back for his blade before the echoes of giggling rang in his ear. His skin crawled with goosebumps at the sound, every nerve in his body ringing in alarm at the sudden danger surrounding him.
“Ah, ah, ah-!” A pretty, melodic voice came from the corner of the room. Yoongi had his hand on his hilt, about to spin towards the danger when a second presence appeared right before him. He barely got a glance at it before he found his body slammed face first up against the boarded up windows of the barber shop. His phone fell down to the ground as the ringing of the call finally connected. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you.”
“How the fuck did you----ahh!” Yoongi yelped in pain as the creature holding him twisted his arm upwards against his back. He clenched his jaw tight, eyes falling down to his phone.
“Hello?” A voice sounded from his speaker. Yoongi wanted to shout something but he thought better of it. He had no idea what had him pinned against the wall at the moment and he didn’t know what kind of threat Jungkook was in either. The most information he could gather was that there were currently two human-like demons in this room with them and that they were way beyond the power level he was used to dealing with. “Yoongi? Is this another butt dial? I swear I’m going to make you delete my number from your phone if you keep--” Seokjin’s voice was cut off as a foot came stomping onto his phone, completely destroying it.
Yoongi found himself being spun around, the hand pinning him finding a new place against his throat. He was slammed back into the wall, his body lifted off the ground by the creature in front of him. His eyes trailed down the arm choking him and found himself staring into a deep red pair of eyes. Yoongi’s gaze flickered over this demons shoulder to find another one in the room with them.
The one currently choking him had an ashy grey hair color. His hair was slightly curly, bangs fanned outwards from his face. His eyes were deep and threatening, his bottom lashes long. Yoongi had never seen him before in his life but the bright red of his iris gave him all the information he needed from the man.
He glanced over towards the other one, spotting him currently sitting in Jungkook’s lap with a hand gripping his chin. This man had a slimmer body than the one currently holding him. His hair was swooped out of his face, the color a light brown. He had puffy and coy eyes, his lips plump and curved into a wicked smile. He forcibly shook Jungkook’s head from side to side with the grip he had on him, chuckling to himself at the fear riddling Jungkook’s face. Yoongi was sensing most of the power between the two resided with him. He also took note of the matching red in his irises as well.
Yoongi slapped both his hands around the wrist of the man choking him, his feet kicking outward as he struggled to get out of his grasp. The man looked completely unfazed, his bored expression falling to the pathetic grip on him. Yoongi watched as his eyes suddenly widened in interest upon seeing the mark scarred into the back of his hand. “Oh,” He breathed. The man turned towards his partner, his voice low and deep. “Jimin, he’s got his mark.”
Jimin turned his attention away from Jungkook, eyes narrowing suspiciously as he studied the mark on the back of Yoongi’s hand. He hummed as he gave him a once over, then dismissed him entirely with a light shrug. “We don’t need him, Taehyung.” He mumbled, his attention falling back towards Jungkook. “This one’s all we need.”
Taehyung hummed, pouting a bit as he stared at the mark on the hand clawing at his wrist.
“W-who’s mark--” Yoongi struggled to get the words out in between wheezes, the pressure against his throat cutting off his air supply. Taehyung watched him struggle for a moment, completely ignoring his choking words. Yoongi swung his feet upwards in an attempt to plant them against the man’s chest but his movements were cut short. Taehyung had gripped Yoongi’s throat tighter, lifting him off the wall and in one swift motion, he swung the two of them around only to slam Yoongi’s body right through the wooden boards he had just been pinned against.
“Yoongi--!” Jungkook’s muffled scream sounded in the distance, confusing Yoongi since he had been in the same room as him just a second ago. He blinked as his mind started to process the view of the sky whipping passed him. The cracking of the boards he crashed through skid across the pavement, his body thrown too fast to tumble alongside them. The confusion never got a chance to sink in as his body slammed into the brick surface of the building across from the abandoned barber shop. His head bounced off of the bricks once, but the one time was enough to rip his consciousness from him.
When Yoongi heard the sound of a comforting and off-key humming, he thought he might have dreamt up all the events prior to him losing consciousness. His mind struggled to come back to him, but the sound was tugging at his brain. There was something very familiar about it but he wasn’t conscious enough to figure out why that was. The humming hadn’t grown any louder, the tune staying consistent and giggly in a way. Once Yoongi’s consciousness had properly come back to him, it didn’t take long for him to recognize the sound.
Yoongi shot upright with wide eyes, the name of the person with him on the tip of his tongue. His words were cut short by his surroundings, his wide eyes scanning the area around him.
He was in a field of flowers, small thin ones that looked like weeds. There wasn’t much of a variety to the plants, the colors all various hues of a light pastel. Yoongi swallowed a lump in his throat as his eyes brought him to the lithe figure knelt down a distance away from him. The man was humming and picking at certain flowers, pulling some right from the stem and holding them up to twist between his fingers.
Yoongi had no idea what was going on.
“You have an awful imagination when it comes to flowers, you know.” The man commented, glancing from the daisy in his hands over towards the starstruck man.
“H…Hoseok?” Yoongi mumbled the name with fear attached to it. There was no way he could be seeing this man right now. Not unless something had happened to himself, that is. “…Did I…die?” Yoongi mumbled, his memory of what happened before this moment slowly creeping back to him.
Hoseok chuckled as he tossed the flower aside. “I wish.” He crept forward towards Yoongi, the flowers bending out of the way for him as he moved. Hoseok sat beside the wounded man and gently slipped his hand under Yoongi’s, bringing it forward. “Use this.” He commented, his finger trailing along the mark on his hand. Yoongi’s brows scrunched together in confusion. “Use it to get back to Jungkook, okay?”
“Jungkook?” Yoongi repeated. He shook his head slightly as he processed what the man told him, only to wind up more confused. “How do you know about Jungkook?”
Hoseok didn’t reply. Instead, he softly brought Yoongi’s hand towards him. Yoongi didn’t pull away, his heart twisting in his chest at how familiar and warm this felt. He watched as Hoseok brought his lips to the mark on his hand, kissing it gently. Yoongi blinked, but found his vision fading into black before he could get the chance to question what Hoseok told him.
The peace and comfort that came with whatever place Yoongi had mentally visited completely left him as his consciousness brought him back to the real world. The first thing Yoongi processed was how heavy his body felt and how badly it hurt. He groaned as his eyes cracked open, the morning sunlight slipping across his face.
Yoongi painfully brought himself upright, dust and rubble falling off his chest as he did so. He brought a hand to his head, the back of his skull ringing in pain. His fingers brushed along the edge of his nape, a stinging rush of pain making him flinch away. He glanced down at his fingertips to see dried blood flakes covering them. “Ugh...” Yoongi groaned as he let his hand fall down to his lap, his next course of action failing to come to him.
“Fuck, I hit my head hard…” He whined to himself, thinking over the odd hallucination he had over the time he had been unconscious. Hoseok might’ve been a common thought running through his head, but Yoongi didn’t think it was to the point to cause a vision that vividly. He shook his head slightly, wincing at the throbbing pain pulsing through his skull. His eyes fell to the building across from him, remembering the pair of possessed men that had interrupted his rendezvous call.
Yoongi struggled to push himself into standing up, his energy low. Those two men that showed up had an interest in Jungkook for some reason that Yoongi didn't understand. Adding that to the weird way the minor demons in the area had been acting, there was definitely something off about that guy. Yoongi didn’t have the slightest clue as what it could’ve been but he was tempted to cut his loses and head back to Namjoon empty handed.
The temptation was strong but Yoongi knew Namjoon would tear into him for messing this up. As far as HQ knew, he was on a simple escort mission that a newbie would be assigned to. If Yoongi had a way to relay all the information he’d gathered since meeting Jungkook, maybe he could save himself but with out a phone, there wasn’t much he could do. Namjoon wouldn’t give him the chance to explain himself if he came back empty handed.
Yoongi groaned to himself in both frustration and pain as stood on his feet. He dragged his worn body back towards the shop he’d been thrown through, side-eyeing the busted window. The power of the man he had to deal with was something to be intimidated by. He didn’t even want to know just what power his friend had.
Yoongi dropped his shoulder against the door, pushing it open and peeking inside. He knew better than to get his hopes up but he was still disappointed when he didn’t spot Jungkook anywhere in the building. He stepped inside in hopes for finding some kind of clue as to where they took him but his movement was halted as his foot stepped onto glass, crunching under the sole of his shoe. Yoongi’s shoulder slumped down, knowing exactly what it was before looking. His head dropped forward as he raised his foot, his shattered phone greeting him. “Right…” He clicked his tongue, an annoyance creeping in.
Yoongi was at a loss of what to do. He had no phone, no Jungkook, his body hurt, and he was sure he must’ve at least sprained his wrist and possibly his ankle when he had been thrown between buildings. If he really thought about it, he might even have a concussion. Needless to say, literally nothing was working in his favor. He stumbled over to the closest chair, plopping down with a heavy sigh. Yoongi slumped into the seat, resting his head over the top of it and closing his eyes. Maybe if he tried hard enough he could bring himself back to the field of flowers and forget about all this.
“Those two…” Yoongi mumbled to himself, the images of the men from before flooding his vision. Their bright red irises crossed his mind, reminding him that they could just be normal innocent humans who happened to be possessed by something way stronger than themselves. It struck Yoongi as odd considering the area they were in, demons were pretty much free to roam in whatever form they chose. Why take over human bodies? And what was so important about Jungkook that they had to take him? What the hell was that guy to be causing so much trouble for him?
Yoongi used his less damaged hand to rub at his eyes, exhaustion encouraging him to pass out exactly as he was. He let his hand fall down to the arm bar, his eyes following it. His mouth fell open just slightly once he caught sight of something new on the engraved marking on the back of his hand. Yoongi snapped his arm upwards, holding his hand in front of his face. The marking on his hand didn’t have any new engravings to it, nothing different in regards to design. No, the thing that had Yoongi completely in awe and confusion was the bright teal light glowing off the back of it.
Yoongi shifted his hand slightly to the left, curious to this sudden activity. In all the years he’d been branded with this mark, this was the first time something had ever happened with it. Yoongi watched as the light on his hand rotated, the luminosity filling in a new portion of his mark. He shifted his hand to the right and again watched the light shift accordingly. To further test it out, Yoongi swung his arm completely to his side, once again watching the light rotate around his engraving. “The…” He blinked, staring at it for a long moment. The light looked brighter than it really was, but Yoongi assumed that was because he wasn’t exactly used to his own skin glowing. The longer he stared at it, the more it was starting to come together exactly what it was. The words Hoseok had said to him in his weird hallucination crossed his mind as he examined it. Hoseok said to use it to find Jungkook. It didn’t make any sense when he said it but now that it was acting up, Yoongi was pretty sure he got the message.
“It’s a fucking compass…” He mumbled to himself, letting his hand fall back to the arm bar. A compass to what? He wasn’t entirely sure but he was guessing Jungkook was a likely candidate. It only left Yoongi with a stronger curiosity to what was going on with that brunette. Unfortunately for Yoongi, this did mean one thing. It meant he still had a job to do.
